Sungsoo Ray Hong is the Director of the Alignment Lab and an Assistant Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at George Mason University. His research lies in the fields of Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). He focuses on developing empirical insights and datasets to understand how people use technology, and on designing novel human–AI collaborative systems that augment human capabilities. His current work centers on technologies for frontline police officers, autistic and ADHD job seekers, and individuals at risk of dementia. The Alignment Lab's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation.

He received his Ph.D. in Human Centered Design and Engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, where he developed and internalized human-centered approaches to building technology for specific user populations. After his Ph.D., he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Computer Science & Engineering at New York University, further developing his expertise in interactive machine learning and human–AI collaborative systems. Prior to his Ph.D., he built expertise in consumer electronics and UI product development at Samsung Electronics (Suwon, South Korea) as a UX designer and UI engineer.
