About

The Alignment Lab is an interdisciplinary research group advancing human-AI collaboration for social good. Grounded in the principles of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), the lab is committed to two core missions: (1) deeply understanding the challenges people face when interacting with technologies, and (2) transforming those challenges into innovative, user-centered solutions. This dual focus ensures that the lab's work remains both empirically grounded and impactful in addressing real-world needs.

Led by Dr. Sungsoo Ray Hong, the lab includes six Ph.D. students as well as master's and undergraduate researchers who collaboratively pursue projects that generate societal impact across three key domains:

  1. Vocational Support for Autistic and ADHD Individuals: Designing human-AI collaboration tools that support autistic individuals and people with ADHD in improving vocational search outcomes and enhancing workplace productivity.
  2. Multi-Robot Video Sensemaking (MRVS): Developing a semi-autonomous, human-in-the-loop robot exploration system to support situational awareness and sensemaking in public safety and disaster recovery contexts.
  3. LLM-driven Interventions for MCI and Alzheimer's Risk: Developing an agentic AI system that improves brain health in people with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's risk by analyzing wearable behavioral logs and engaging supportive caregivers.

As of July 2025, projects in the Alignment Lab have been supported by two programs of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Impact (ORIEI) at George Mason University.
